Cell phone batteries are drained very quickly. Therefore, the fact that apps limiting energy consumptions are very popular is not surprising. One such application, namely, ‘Advanced Battery Saver’ (no longer available) was recently added to Google Play and was found to have an additional feature. It enabled reading phone data such as text messages, WWW browsing data, contacts or location and forwarding them to a C&C server.
Advanced Battery Saver – automatic “update” installation
The application was installed when a user accidentally visited one of several malicious websites. These displayed a window with a message that stated that this app required installation. This then took place regardless of whether the user pressed Cancel or Install.
First reports indicate that more than 60 000 Android devices could have been infected.
