Facebook – 2.2 billion troubles

April 5, 2018

Another sensation from Facebook, the world’s largest social network. As it turns out, the data of 2.2 billion users was leaked.

Mark Zuckerberg claims that this was a deed done by bad people who found a way to exploit a search tool to extract data from the servers. This is yet another act of drama, with Facebook in the spotlight. The first was the Cambridge Analytical scandal (50 million people affected), the second was another leak (involving 77 million users) and now this.

Even worse than the number of compromised accounts is how the stolen data was used. ndependent researchers are continuously reporting campaigns manipulating people in the USA (during the election), Nigeria and Great Britain.

With detailed personal data at their disposal – from e-mail, through home address and current photo, to phone number – the criminals were able to create very efficient campaigns for user manipulation. A person known in intimate detail is also an easy target for a cyber-attack.

The fact that Zuckerberg is defending the mechanisms for collecting detailed data on every Facebook user adds extra spice to the situation. He claims that people prefer well-profiled ads on their profiles than their privacy.

Naturally, the user data can be found in Darkweb.
