The MMM group won the competition for the best data categorization software at the third edition of HackYeah hackathon, which ended yesterday. Their project, ‘Uncategorized Data Exploration Tool (UDET)’, defeated 6 other solutions. Its authors won a prize of PLN 10 000.

EXATEL – DATA CATEGORIZING SOFTWARE

If there is something in this world that is growing, it is definitely the volume of data. The amounts are expanding at a dizzying pace. Data analysis methods are also changing. Unfortunately, traditional tools are becoming obsolete, are too expensive and ineffective.

Therefore, the objective of EXATEL’s challenge was to develop a mechanism based on machine learning. A solution that would sort data into relevant and irrelevant – that which requires human review and that which does not. In other words – teaching software to evaluate data content.

24 hours of work

The task was attempted by a dozen or so teams from Poland and abroad. In just one day, they had to understand the task, analyse the data (20 GB containing over 3.5 million text documents) and develop a working solution. They were also helped by 3 mentors and EXATEL jury members – Piotr Dudzic, Tomasz Fortuna and Piotr Mierzwiński. The non-extendible deadline fell on noon on Sunday.

3 hours of jury work

After an hour-long deliberation, the EXATEL jury qualified 7 projects. Each team had 12 minutes to present their solution. The correct functioning of the approach had also to be proven. However, the level of the competitors was so high, and the rivalry so fierce that the jury ended its deliberations literally a minute before 3 p.m. – which was just before the award ceremony began. There could only be one winner …

MMM received PLN 10 000

… and it was the MMM team with its solution dubbed ‘Uncategorized Data Exploration Tool (UDET)’. This is a fully functional solution that browsed the database on the go and enabled search by category and documentation ID, as well as by phrases, etc. Importantly – it had a simple and legible user panel. The jury was unanimous that the prize should go to MMM – and this was the case. Therefore, we would like to congratulate the winners once again!
